Gordys Fly Trap

How it works .

Gordon and Elaine McCallum from Blenheim in New Zealand first launched their patented award winning product in 2000.

After 15 years of trials and prototypes they have perfected a flytrap fitting which turns preserving jars, supermarket shopping bags and even 45 gallon drums into effective flytraps.

The fitting is made from UV protected polycarbonate with a life span in the sun of exceeding 10 years and consists of a clear disc with a 65mm recess. The fly passes through a 32mm tube into the receptacle where it is trapped.

Around the tube between the entry point and the trap there is a grille which allows more scent to leave the trap as well as allowing flies to sense fresh air without finding the entry point.

It also helps air to flow and reduce the internal temperature of the trap if it is in direct sunlight.

If the trap becomes too warm this will deter flies from entering so an area shaded in the heat of the day is ideal.

A protruding blade splits the entry tube. When in position with the blade at 90 degrees to the wind direction this helps draw more scent from the trap and therefore helps to attract more flies.

Air movement over the blade, which is 20mm above the window creates a low pressure, or venturi which draws the scent from the container.

Gordy designed the fitting to fit a 10 litre paint pail, but many receptacles can be used to complete the trap.
